A Tiger’s Life
Tigers have a mysterious and a secretive life as well as many behaviors.
Territory is very important to tigers. A tiger will mark its territory by scratching its scent on a tree and even peeing on it. It does this to secure its land so other tigers will know the area is already claimed. However, this won’t stop a tiger from invading, and many fights occur.
During mating season, a male will pair up with a female to stay together and mate. During this time, a male will become friendly to the female but really aggressive to other males. Tigers do not mate for life.
Once mating has happened, a tiger cub will remain unborn for 90-110 days. A female tiger can have two or more cubs in one litter, and it will be very protective of her cubs in this period. When a tiger is born, it will drink its mother’s milk for 6-8 weeks; then it will start to eat meat. The cubs will stay with their mother for 2-3 years to learn to hunt and to survive in the wild themselves. After that, they leave their mom and live on their own. From the point a cub is born to when it is mating season again, the father tiger will become more separate from the mother and he will leave, since they aren’t involved in fathering the child. Also, a mother will have litters every two years.
A tiger will usually live from 10-15 years in the wild.
